General information for those who want to succeed in FEEC postgraduate application:
- Read the official program notice (edital) carefully: It's published every semester on the FEEC's homepage. Don't miss it!
- Professors Choose Their Students: Each professor decides who they mentor. If they have no openings, your application might not be reviewed.
- Pro Tip: Build relationships with professors beforehand! This significantly improves your chances.
- If you do not indicate any faculty advisor on your application form, it may be reviewed by multiple faculty members.
How I Select My Graduate Students
-
Having a previous relationship with my research group is a critical factor in my selection process.
-
I typically prioritize:
- Candidates who have already participated in undergraduate research programs within our group (scientific initiation program), and demonstrated commitment and a desire to continue an academic career under my supervision.
- Candidates that contacted me well in advance, attended my classes, and impressed me with their skills.
- Candidates that responded to a specific project call and were accepted.
-
Exceptional candidates can still stand out. If you haven't had the chance to build a prior relationship, you can still make your application competitive if you have a very strong academic record, compelling recommendation letters, and a well-developed research statement that aligns perfectly with my interests
Before trying to reach me or asking for my supervision, consider the following information
- Proficiency in English is a requirement for effective communication within the research group.
- If you are accepted, the presence in the lab is mandatory.
- Avoid sending generic emails.
Personalize your message and highlight your qualifications and research interests.
Please include your academic records, your research statement in English and your references.
- Include in your plan that I may have a backlog and prioritize responses to students who have already established a connection with our group.
Consider Starting as a "Special Student"
- Take postgraduate courses without full program enrollment.
- Earn credits that can potentially count towards your degree later (approval by your advisor required).
- Great way to explore the program, meet professors, and build connections.
- Ideal if you're still working or not fully ready for full-time studies.
Important Details about "Special Student" Status:
- Limited enrollment: Only 2 courses per semester.
- Competitive acceptance: Submit strong application materials highlighting your background and interest.
- Up to 50% of your credits can come from outside FEEC, but credit validation depends on your advisor. Professors have the final say on credit validation from your "special student" courses.
- Registration opens well before the semester starts - check the FEEC website to avoid missing deadlines.
- Aim for 16 credits for a Master's degree (typically 4 courses at FEEC), or 32 credits for a PhD (tipically 8 courses).
By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to a successful application and a rewarding experience in the FEEC postgraduate program!
